What does a termite inspection entail?

The Eastern subterranean termite is the most damaging insect that we treat for in this area of the U.S. They affect more than 600,000 homes and do about $5 billion in damage in the U.S. each year. With the average cost of a termite service ranging between $1,300-$1,500, we recommend getting your home checked for termites every year.

A normal termite inspection takes about 45 minutes and involves check in the inside and outside of the home. Inspectors check for obvious things like wood damage and mud tubes but there are many other areas that need careful inspection. Crawl spaces are very common areas for termites to be in, since not everyone goes into their crawl space, termites oftentimes go overlooked for years in these areas.

The foundation of the home is check for mud tubes (pencil size tubes termites use to navigate) and other signs of activity. Also on the exterior, they will check for wood to soil contact. This could be a stack of firewood on the laying ground too close to the house or deck posts that aren’t set concrete. No matter what it is, wood to soil contact is the easiest way for termites to find your home.

They will also check trees, stumps, wooden retaining walls, wooden sheds, detached garages and any other structures on the property for signs of activity.  Being proactive and early detection are the two things any homeowner can do to keep from ever having to do an expensive termite remediation.
