Mosquito Born Diseases

Mosquito bites are itchy, frustrating bumps that can ruin your entire summer. All it takes is a single bite and suddenly you’re experiencing weeks of itchy, terrible discomfort that feels like it never ends.

But when it comes to mosquitoes, itchy bumps are the least of your concern. Mosquitoes are one of the few insects that can carry and spread disease, and while your likelihood of a mosquito-borne disease are relatively small, the diseases that are spread by mosquitoes can, in some cases, be fatal.

Mosquito Borne Diseases

  • West Nile virus – West Nile virus is becoming more and more common in the United States. This virus is spread through mosquito bites and causes symptoms that resemble the flu, except that these symptoms can last 30 to 60 days or more. West Nile Virus can also cause other issues, such as inflammation of the brain, which could be deadly. It is especially risky to children and the elderly.
  • Dengue Fever – Though rare, dengue fever is becoming an increasing concern in the United States. It’s not something you have to worry about here in the North East, but in Florida and Arizona there are now some cases of Dengue fever popping up, and it’s a good idea to continuously pay attention to the spread. Dengue fever is rarely deadly, but it can be a vicious virus with a high fever and joint pain.
  • Canine Heartworm – While humans are not at risk, your pets may be. Canine heartworm can be a deadly disease for infected animals with expensive treatments. This roundworm invades the lungs of infected dogs, grow into adults, and can cause deadly heart failure.

Staying Safe From Mosquitoes

There are also a host of viruses spread by mosquitoes that cause no symptoms, but their risk cannot always be calculated. Furthermore, scratching mosquito bites can lead to significant infections, especially in children and pets that may not be cleaning the cuts responsibly.
