Does Clorox Bleach Kill Bed Bugs?

Yes, bleach will kill bed bugs. That very potent smell that bothers you bothers bed bugs, too. It’s so strong that it interferes with the bed bug respiratory system, causing them to suffocate after a few hours of exposure.

While it can kill bed bugs, bleach is not recommended for use on your mattress. You can, however, use it on your color-safe sheets in the washing machine. It just might not be necessary because one of the most reliable treatments for bed bugs is heat—and we often recommend putting your sheets in the dryer first and then the washing machine at high temps!

Since Clorox isn’t our top bed bug solution, we recommend you use these tested and reliable methods:

• Heat: Put the black trash bags full of linens, clothing, and towels outside into direct sunlight, preferably in 80F+ degrees and leave them there until sunset. Heat should kill the existing bugs. Dealing with bed bugs during the cooler months? You can put your things straight into the dryer for a longer time than usual. Then wash in hot water and dry again.
• Clean Areas of Infestations: Give every room a thorough cleaning by scrubbing every surface with a stiff brush to dislodge the eggs. Then vacuum every surface multiple times. Don’t give them a chance to get out, so be sure to toss vacuum cleaner bags in outside cans immediately.
• Insecticide Strips: You can find insecticide strips at your local home improvement store. Put personal items made of fabric like throw blankets and pillows, stuffed animals, and slippers into black trash bags with insecticide strips. You’ll need to keep these bags outside for a few days.
