How to Prevent Bed Bugs

How to Sleep with Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are making headlines again. There are reports of the pests on planes, public areas, and hotels. You can’t control every environment you enter, but you can take steps to prevent bed bugs in your home.

Wash Often

Send your clothing, sheets, stuffed animals, and towels through a hot wash regularly to prevent bed bugs. They thrive in dirty environments, so going too long between washes gives them a comfy place to call their own.

It might be tempting to carry the sleeping kiddos right from the car to their bed, but putting on clean clothes before bed is a safe practice. Bed bugs can easily cling to clothing and other soft objects, and you don’t want to give them a chance to hop into bed with you.

Be Mindful of Where You Purchase Things

That futon you found out a yard sale might be a great deal—bed bugs might even agree with you! The pesky pests can easily hitch a ride into your home on furniture, clothing, and toys. To prevent bed bugs, be careful with purchases, especially second-hand ones. Consider cleaning everything right away.

Watch out for Signs of Bed Bugs

Sometimes, even the best preventative measures aren’t enough for resilient pests. Using a flashlight, inspect common infestation areas, like sheets, comforters, mattresses, box springs, bed frames, piles of clothes, and towels. Don’t forget to check your body, too. Look for these signs:

  • A rash on your skin that looks like a mosquito bite, but swells, burns, and spreads more
  • Light-brown exoskeletons from molting bugs
  • Specks of blood on your sheets from when they bite you in your sleep
