What Do Earwigs Look Like?

Earwig

Earwigs are creepy-looking bugs that got their name from the way they used to crawl into ladies’ wigs in the 18th century. Good news: they do not crawl into your ears at night! Here’s what you should know about them:

Earwig Identification

Earwigs have a very distinct appearance and movement that makes them look much scarier than they actually are. They are sometimes confused with silverfish and firebrats from afar, but you can identify them by these characteristics:

  • Claw-like forcepts
  • A segmented body
  • Often a dark, reddish-brown color, but some species are brown or black
  • May have wings or forewings and may be able to fly
  • Six brownish-yellow legs
  • Approximately ½ inch to ¼ inch in length
  • Ability to climb up walls

Why Earwigs Invade Your Home

Earwigs invade your home looking for moisture when it is dry or cold outside.  They come in through cracks and make themselves at home in areas with moisture, like bathrooms, basements, and any area with leaky pipes. If they’re not inside your home, they can get comfortable in your garden, as they like to eat plants.
